Passenger safety is a priority for Metro. Guidance for avoiding slips, trips and falls Take care during wet conditions – if you cannot avoid walking in an area of a station where a yellow warning sign is displayed, please remember to take extra care. A recent Metro passenger survey found less than half of respondents would walk slower through a danger area identified with a yellow cone (48%). If carrying heavy/bulky items of shopping, please use the station lift instead of the escalator. Avoid running to catch the train. Always try to allow plenty of time for your journey. Think of the safety of others as well as your own. Keep floor surfaces tidy. Please place litter in the bins provided. When using escalators remember to:- • Stand to the right, facing forward - don’t lean on the side or sit down • Hold the handrail • Take care when stepping on and off • Be especially careful if you have loose shoelaces, or are wearing scarves/baggy clothes - they can get caught in moving parts Guidance on boarding and exiting trains Before boarding the train - stand aside to allow passengers to exit first before boarding. Do not attempt to board a train unless it is safe to do so. Passengers should not attempt to board a train if the external door lights are flashing red after the doors closing warning has sounded. A recent Metro passenger survey showed 13% try to board or exit a train after the ‘doors closing’ warning has sounded. Do not hold the doors open or attempt to stop them closing – this can cause damage to the doors but can also pose a risk to passenger safety. Always take care to avoid the gap between train and platform when boarding or exiting, especially if you are travelling with a buggy or wheelchair. Our trains have spacious vestibule areas designed for buggy and wheelchair users. When travelling with young children, hold their hands. If you suffer or witness an accident on the Metro – please tell us. (a) At a station - use the Metro Help Point or speak to a member of staff. (b) If on a train - phone or text 0191 203 3666.
