As operator of the Metro system, Nexus owns one of the more substantial property portfolios in Tyne and Wear, with 140 kilometres of track, 59 stations, a sizeable depot and other facilities. The commercial income from this portfolio accounts for a significant part of Nexus' income, offsetting operational costs and reducing the requirement for public subsidy. Nexus is committed to obtaining the highest possible return from its assets, consistent with maintaining a first-class service to its passengers and is always receptive to new business enquiries and propositions. Consultancy services Day-to-day management of Nexus’ property portfolio is undertaken in-house to ensure a smooth interface between commercial and operational activities but a number of specialist functions are regularly outsourced. Details of these services will be displayed here when such consultancies are required. Commercial and retail opportunities Metro stations vary from small open platform halts to substantial Victorian structures and modern purpose-built transport interchanges. Commercial opportunities are equally varied. Many stations incorporate the traditional news agency, but Nexus is always keen to explore other appropriate uses of concourse space and accommodation.
