Superoute

A Superoute Bus

The next step in the Superoute programme, launched in 2002, will offer passengers the guarantee of frequent services all day, every day, low-floor easy access buses, smoother journeys and better information. They'll give passengers reliable, high-frequency buses that compete with the car for cost and convenience on our busiest routes into towns and cities.

Effort will be concentrated onto the most important commuter routes into urban centres, with local authorities, Nexus and bus companies joining forces to deliver a better service for passengers. Bus priority technology will include conventional no-car and bus-only lanes but also traffic lights that change as buses approach and buses linked to gps-technology to deliver real time information to stops. Superoute investment will also improve accessibility for passengers by providing raised kerbs and bus stop clearways, and installation of new shelters in key locations.

Current Superoute improvements already made include:

Felling bypass – opened in October 07, over £1million was spent to create a new bus lane alongside existing traffic, allowing up to 17 buses per hour to beat the jams and save passengers up to 7 minutes on their journey.

Newcastle’s West End – close liaison between Superoute partners identified the need for removal of traffic calming measures in the West End of Newcastle, which was completed in August 08. This will allow the conversion of Stagecoach’s popular service 1 to Superoute standard with the introduction of state of the art low floor buses.

Bus Stop Infrastructure – continued and ongoing investment to increase the number of raised kerbs to improve accessibility, increasing the number of shelters on key corridors, and installation of more bus stop clearways to ensure buses can easily pull up to bus stops on many corridors across Tyne and Wear.
